In this tutorial Simulation low-velocity impact response and damage mechanism of glass fiber aluminium laminates in Abaqus has been studied.Glass fiber aluminium laminate (GLARE) is a kind of fiber metal laminates widely applied in aircraft structures, frequently subjected to low-velocity impact incidents. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the dynamic response and damage mechanism characterization of GLARE under single and repeated low-velocity impacts. In this simulation two aluminium plates at the top and bottom and four glass fibers plates at the middle have been used. You can see a figure of the assembled parts at below
For aluminium plates Johnson-Cook plasticity and damage has been used to predict the deformation and damage under the rigid projectile. Glass fiber is modeled as engineering constant elasticity with Hashin’s damage criterion for fibers. Dynamic explicit procedure is appropriate for this type of analysis.Cohesive behavior is applied as stiffness, damage and tangential behavior to the contact area ..If the impact energy goes up than the value which define in the cohesive contact ,delamination happens among the surfaces. The mesh should be fine at the impact zone. After the simulation the stress, strain ,damage and other outputs are achievable . You can see some figures of the result at below
