In this tutorial, the Numerical simulation on damage mechanics behavior of a pipeline under internal explosion in Abaqus  has been investigated. The steel pipe is modeled as a three-dimensional shell part. The soil is modeled as a three-dimensional solid part. Half of the steel pipe is placed inside the soil. You can see a figure of the assembled parts below

The pipeline has characteristics such as long conveying distance, big tube pressure and wide  range of distribution. Once tube burst and other accidents occur, it is very easy to cause explosion  and combustion, resulting in immeasurable loss of life and property. Due to the variability of the  medium conditions and the complexity of the boundary conditions, it is impossible to solve the  problem about high-pressure pipeline blasting accurately.The Johnson-Cook plasticity model is selected for the steel pipe. It is a particular type of Mises plasticity model with analytical forms of the hardening law and .rate dependence, suitable for high-strain-rate deformation of many materials including most metals The JC plasticity and damage model is used for the steel pipe to consider high rate load and damage during the blast load. The Mohr-Coulomb plasticity model is selected for the soil material. The dynamic explicit step is appropriate for this type of analysis. The general contact capability with friction as contact behavior is used. To define the contact between the lower surface of the steel pipe and soil, the ideal contact or tie constrains is selected. The CONWEP blast procedure by using TNT definition as incident wave is used. The fixed boundary condition is assigned to the bottom surface of the soil and pin boundary condition to two ends of the pipe. The mesh should be find to achieve the correct results

After the simulation, all results such as stress, strain, damage, swelling, soil deformation, blast depth, and … are available. You can see some figures for the results below
