In this tutorial, the Simulation of rigid impact on the composite panel(Aluminum and Wood) in Abaqus has been investigated. The rigid impactor is modeled as the shell part. The aluminum plate is modeled as a three-dimensional solid part. The wood layer is modeled as a three-dimensional part with some layers. You can see a figure of the assembled parts below
To model aluminum behavior under impact load, the Johnson-Cook hardening and damage are selected. The Johnson-Cook plasticity model is a particular type of Mises plasticity model with analytical forms of the hardening law and rate dependence, and suitable for the high-strain-rate deformation of many materials, including most metals
Wood can be modeled through some material models and it is so important to select a material model that considers the damage and its evolution during the impact test
The dynamic explicit step is appropriate for this type of analysis. The proper interaction between the layers with specific contact properties is considered. The boundary conditions to the layers and initial velocity to the rigid body are assigned. The mesh for all parts should be fine to obtain the correct results
After the simulation, all results such as stress, strain, damage, penetration, failure, force diagram, and others are available. You can see some figures for the results below
