In this tutorial, the Simulation air blast explosion over the composite panel(Concrete+Titanium foam) in Abaqus has been investigated. The concrete and titanium foam part is modeled as three-dimensional solid parts. The metal foam is used as an energy absorber. You can see a figure of the assembled parts below
To model titanium foam behavior under intense loads such as detonation and impact, the Crushable foam model is good choice. The metal foam is modeled as elastic material with isotropic crushable plasticity with hardening. This model can predict the metal foam compaction during the explosion. To model concrete behavior as a brittle material, Abaqus gives many options such as Concrete Damage Plasticity, Brittle Cracking, Johnson Holmquist, and Johnson Holmquist Cook that can be used in this simulation, These material model can predict the progressive damage and modeling concrete failure. The dynamic explicit procedure is appropriate for this type of analysis. The CONWEP procedure is selected to define the blast method. The tie constraint is used between the metal foam and concrete as interaction. The fixed boundary condition is applied to the sides of the panel and the mesh should be fine to obtain the proper results for the failure and damage
After the simulation all results such as damage variable, failure, stress, strain,….are achievable. You can see some figures for the results below
