In this tutorial, the simulation four points bending of an RC beam strengthened with CFRP sheet in Abaqus has been investigated. The concrete beam is modeled as a three-dimensional solid part. The strips and bars are modeled as three-dimensional wire part. The CFRP sheet is modeled as a three-dimensional shell part and the rigid bodies are modeled as shell parts. You can see figures of the assembled parts at below
The concrete Damaged Plasticity is used to model concrete behavior under static bending load. This material model gives tension and compression stress separately. It can predict tensile and compression damage during the bending. The elastic-plastic material model is used for the bars and strips. The CRFP material is modeled with the elastic property as an engineering constant and to define damage behavior, Hashin’s damage criterion is used. The general static step is appropriate for this type of analysis. The perfect contact is assumed between the concrete beam and the CFRP sheet. The surface to surface contact is used among the rigid bodies and concrete beam with friction coefficient as a contact property. The strips and bars are embedded inside the concrete host. The fixed boundary condition is used for the two bottom rigid bodies and displacement with a smooth amplitude to have the smooth load rate for two upper rigid bodies. The mesh should be fine to achieve the correct results
After the simulation, all results such as stress, strain, tensile damage, compression damage, and displacement are obtainable. You can see some figures for the results below
