In this tutorial Simulation of concrete cover separation failure in FRP plated RC beam in Abaqus has been studied. The infrastructures in developed countries are aging and in addition changes in their using purposes, increase of load level, constructional faults and damages or deterioration demand adequate maintenance and the upgrading of existing structural members. In other words, if structural members in a bridge or a building are rendered incapable of resisting the applied loads due to poor construction, marginal design or inferior materials, one solution is to increase the load capacity of the affected members by strengthening them. Externally-bonded fiber reinforced polymers and steel plates are now routinely used for strengthening the structures and this method is a viable solution to costly replacement of deteriorating structures. The advantage of strengthening by bonding is that it increases the life of reinforced structures and that can limit the stress concentrations in comparison to the assembly by bolting. Nowadays FRP sheets are used more than the steel plates because of numerous advantages such as minimum increases in structural size and weight, high strength-to-weight ratio, ease of site handling and excellent corrosion resistance
The concrete beam is modeled as three dimensional part, epoxy glue as a solid part, FRP as conventional shell and the supporters as rigid bodies. The Concrete Damaged Plasticity for concrete is used to model its behavior under bending. The lamina elasticity form with fail stress and Hashin’s damage criterion for FRP,Elastic as traction behavior and traction separation law for epoxy glue are used. You can see a figure about assembled parts at below
The static solver is not suitable because of the damage and deformation which happens in this simulation and instead it,dynamic explicit procedure is used. The surface to surface contacts between rigid bodies and concrete beam and perfect contact between concrete beam and epoxy glue,FRP and epoxy glue are considered. The load displacement control for the top rigid body and fixed boundary conditions for the supporters are used. For the epoxy cohesive element in the mesh section is used to represent the cohesive behavior
After the simulation the FRP separation and epoxy fail happens and all damage variable for FRP and glue are achievable. The tensile and compression damage for concrete ,stress, strain and other result can be observed. You can see some figures of the results at below
